HK Tryke Incorporated is a Dayton, Ohio company that sells high quality tricycle products and creative play area services which generates funds to support a (soon to be built) childcare facility designed to achieve national accreditation and to serve urban children.

Our Story

Founding a company devoted to the environment and to children isn't so unusual. Yet, the DNA of HK Tryke isn't so common. Our heritage begins more than 160 years ago with a small parish founded by school teachers with a special dedication to children. Members of the church included the Wright Brothers -- the world famous bicycle makers and founding fathers of powered human flight. Out of this lineage, and generations of growth, a partnership was formed between the parish and a charter school to bring a unique educational model to urban children struggling with reading and math. After school programs including martial arts and music became common.

As the after school programs grew, the parish conducted an in-depth evaluation of the surrounding neighborhood's demographics. Their location was found to be the most densely populated area with children per city block in the county, with 54% of all household being single parented. Serving children was not a question. How best to serve the families of the neighborhood was of critical importance. To that end, the church mortgaged its building to bring a new infant childcare center to its neighborhood.

As the need grew to necessitate a second childcare center, church and community leaders made a startling observation. In the neighborhood heavily comprised of children, there were literally no tricycles. It became a point of conversation among persons working on the childcare project -- and a new idea came to life. Why not a tricycle park?

Architects already working on the new child care center did a quick sketch of what a potential park might look like, but the board members wanted more. They wanted a tricycle park that was sensitive to developing children's motor skills and would spark their imaginations. Why not build a tricycle that looks like a horse, with a horse head and tail painted in a horse color? Why not make the tricycle shed look like a barn? Why not have a cupola on top, and outdoor class room and restroom? Why not build a place where a child could safely ride a tricycle, go to motor skill stations and play, then ride their tricycle to the next station? And why can't their tricycle have a name? Why not build a place where parents of young children could meet and talk? Why not have an innovative, research-validated, park that serves small children?

As the ideas began to take shape, another realization came to light. Many of the childcare centers in the neighborhood were using off-the-shelf consumer tricycles instead of solid commercial grade models. Their flimsy designs lacked the structural integrity to withstand continuous use by multiple children in a play area. Could a new distributor of tricycles be created and serve an even larger community?

To answer all the above questions and in order to raise funds to support the needs of urban children, this new company was born: HK Tryke. Our desire is to be green, to support the healthy growth of children and to provide opportunities for urban children to have a safe and healthy place to play and grow.
